Laurel leaves: laurel in our Mediterranean cultures is a symbol of victory, of life, of resurrection: with it crowns are made for the winners, for the fallen soldiers to mean that they live.
The Cross is crowned with laurel in countless early Christian depictions.
The faithful and the churches are sprinkled with laurel on Holy Saturday in the divine liturgy of the Byzantine Rite while the Tropario is sung: «Christ rose from the dead; with death trampling death, the dead in the sepulchers gave life back».
In this Casula, the proper robe of the priest (cf IGMR 337), every golden laurel leaf is a baptized immersed in the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus (Rm 6,2-7), become light and fire; the priest who wears it is clothed with all of them, taking them with him to the altar of God.
